Ways to save for the big day

The median cost of a wedding fell 8 percent to $17,500 in 2009 versus 2008, according to the Knot. To keep costs down, a number of sites are offering up some smart tips including the following: Hire a younger photographer and cut the number of guests, buy a wedding dress at a thrift shop, rent tuxedos and suits, hire a wedding planner and accept contributions, serve a cake made up of a layer of cupcakes, consider off-peak times and look for package deals or bridal show bargains, and check for hidden costs at wedding locales, such as cleanup, length of usage and whether a deposit is refundable.
